Types of tobacco

At present farmers define three main types of tobacco: Virginia, Burley and Oriental:

  • Virginia tobacco – is often called bright tobacco because of the golden and sometimes orange color it reaches during curing process. Generally Virginia tobacco is cured in heated barns within a week. This tobacco sort has a soft, mild flavor and taste. The leading countries where Virginia tobacco is cultivated are Brazil, India, Tanzania and the U.S.
  • Burley tobacco – has a brown color that varies from light to dark. This tobacco is air-dried in barns for a very long time, which usually takes approximately 2 months. During this process burley tobacco loses the main part of its natural sugars, and acquires a rather strong almost as cigar taste. The most popular burley growing countries are Argentina, Italy and Malawi. Well-known Lucky Strike and Pall Mall cigarette brand are made from burley tobacco.
  • Oriental tobacco – is probably the most aromatic from the existed tobacco types. It has little leaves, which are picked up leaf by leaf and after sun-cured in the open air. Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey are the largest oriental tobacco growing countries.

Tobacco blends

The above listed tobacco types are usually mixed thus creating new tobacco blends to manufacture various smoking products. The most common tobacco blends used in cigarettes are: Blended and Virginia cigarettes:

  • Blended cigarettes – generally contains three main tobacco types: Virginia, Burley and Oriental. Usually, blended cigarettes possess additional ingredients that compensate sugars lost during the curing process of burley tobacco and to assure an exquisite and refined flavor of each cigarette brand. Blended cigarettes are most popular in Europe, the United States and in some Asian countries. Among the most famous blended cigarette brands are Marlboro, L&M and Chesterfield, produced by the tobacco giant Philip Morris International.
  • Virginia cigarettes – are usually made of Virginia tobacco, however there are some modified Virginia blends, which contain some amount of burley or oriental tobacco types. This cigarette blend is mostly preferred in Britain, India and South Africa. China is considered the world’s biggest cigarette market of Virginia blend cigarettes. Virginia blends do not possess any flavoring additives. Cigarette brands as Dunhill are made exclusively from Virginia tobacco.
