In the past, almost all people considered that smoking hookahs is safer than smoking cigarettes. Some of them were not smokers however they smoked tobacco through water pipe with their friends in every weekend or after work end.

But a recent study found that smoking tobacco through a water pipe exposes the user to the same toxic products, like carbon monoxide and nicotine, which are contained in every cigarette. And also this “healthy habit” could lead to nicotine addiction and heart disease.

The water pipe smokers continue to belief that this procedure of smoking tobacco delivers less tar and nicotine than regular cigarette smoking and has fewer negative health effects. However, this new study has disabled this belief.

Thomas Eissenberg, Ph.D., professor in the VCU Department of Psychology, said: “The results are important because they provide concrete, scientific evidence that contradicts the oft-repeated myth that water pipe tobacco smoking does not involve users inhaling the same harmful chemicals that cigarette smokers do. We expect that these results will be used by physicians and public health officials for to let the people know that the hookahs are injurious as cigarettes.”

Researchers investigated 31 people between the ages of 18 and 50, and compared the toxicant exposure associated with water pipe smoking and cigarette smoking.

Each member executed two 45-minute meetings, one in which they smoked tobacco using a water pipe and the other in which they smoked a cigarette. Then was measured the level of nicotine and carbon monoxide in the participants’ blood, heart rate, puff number and puff volume.

At the end of the investigation they found that the levels of carbon monoxide to which participants were exposed were higher when they were smoking a water pipe than when they were smoking a cigarette. Especially, the weaken water pipe COHb level - amount of carbon monoxide found bound to red blood cells - was three times than was observed in cigarette smokers.

However, they observed that there was exposure to nicotine through both methods of tobacco smoke.

Researchers concluded that thanks to this last study they and maybe all people understood how harmful can be water pipes. They also added that water pipe tobacco smoking involved inhalation of about 48 times more smoke.
