Smoking rates highest among Native Americans

In 2009, almost one-quarter of Native Americans smoked tobacco products. The Native American Heritage Month and Lung Cancer Awareness Month, EX proposes a free method to fight against the smoking addiction.

According to the latest research approximately 6 million of people worldwide will die from tobacco related diseases in 2010, EX started a campaign that is aimed at helping 46.6 million Americans smokers to finally quit. The free proved tools will help smokers quit this bad habit, including information that can also help them be ready to stop smoking and try to imagine their life without tobacco products.

“Native Americans continue to use tobacco products at a high rate, and it is very difficult to get rid of this addiction. It is very important to provide those Native Americans who smoke with quitting methods. EX is a free method created by and for smokers, and I am sure that it can help many people to start a new life where will not be place for any tobacco products,” stated Cheryl G. Healton, president and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation.

The majority of smokers in America, about 70% want to stop smoking, but only 5% of them realized to quit in 2009. Specially, for those smokers who decided to quit, the EX website, offers a free quit plan with tools and information that can help them to create their own plans.

Since March 2008, when this campaign was started, more than one million people have visited the site and mote than 22,000 smokers have joined specially created online community. EX was created in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic and with input from former smokers who fought against this habit and can supply smokers with evidence-based methods and ideas.

EX is a joint public health campaign represented by the National Alliance for Tobacco Cessation, which includes leading organizations and states. This campaign helps smokers to quit and provides them with useful resources that show successful quit attempts including the EX plan. EX is the result of many years of research, testing and understanding of the power and consequences of nicotine addiction. It is focusing on re-starting life without cigarettes, encouraging smokers to view differently the act of quitting. The campaign that started transmitting nationwide in March 2008 includes radio, television, online and billboards.

The EX helps smokers to think up their own quitting plan and also share their stories and methods about quitting with other people in a specially created virtual community. Sponsoring members of the NATC include various states, institutions and associations as the American Heart Association, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and others.
