Cigarette High Taxes are Gold Fever for States

Almost all countries raised cigarette taxes for to increase their state revenue without thinking that this move is a harsh one for smokers.

All lawmakers have voted to raise cigarettes taxes by $1 per pack in Utah and 75 cents a cigarettes pack in New Mexico. At the end other states have been supposed to have increased prices. For example, in 2009, 14 states and the District of Columbia raised cigarette taxes too.

These all actions against tobacco products are remarkable, because since 1950 this year is the 10th time when states have raised cigarette taxes, statistics show.

Pete Fisher of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an anti-smoking group explained: “The most important reason at the present for most lawmakers is the state revenue.”

At the present the normal state cigarette tax is $1.34 per pack. It was raised last year to $1.01 per pack. Form all these states, Rhode Island has the highest cigarettes tax at $3.46. But in South Carolina is lowest tax at 7 cents.

Recent studies showed currently about 46 million Americans smoke. Frank Lester, delegate for cigarette-manufacturer Reynolds American sustained that in general the increased taxes will only push more smokers to buy smoking products in states where they are cheaper or even chose the illegal products. That’s why most of smokers are struggling against this anti-tobacco legislation.

However, democratic Gov. Bill Richardson decided to sign the new 75-cent cigarettes tax. Cigarettes tax was increased in other states too. For example:

  • Washington: State legislators in special meeting decided to increase the state’s cigarettes price by $1, bringing it to more than $3 a pack.
  • South Carolina: This month lawmakers voted to raise the tobacco tax by 30 cents per pack.
  • Kansas: Government raised the state’s 79-cent-per-pack cigarette tax by 55 cents.

Researchers concluded that for every 10% price increase, cigarette use decreases by 3% to 4% especially among adults and twice among young people.
